Piedmont Camp Gold Rush and Famous Egg Drop Close a Successful Week

Cub Scout “Gold Rush” Day Camp, a Piedmont tradition since the 1970’s, concluded this past week with the famous Egg Drop contest. Camp Gold Rush offered a great value and fun experience for 41 boys and girls, 1st to 4th grade. Kids created period arts & crafts, searched for treasure, played frontier games and best of all, were outdoors all afternoon.

The week closed Friday evening with the famous Egg Drop contest—the original STEM project! Campers were challenged to build a creative container that would protect a raw egg from being dropped from the top of the fire truck ladder. Families packed the lawn, enjoying picnic dinners while betting which eggs would survive the 50-foot drop.

Fire Chief Bud McClaren and Captain Dave Swan fondly remember Egg Drop events going back more than 30 years. According to Captain Swan, “it’s a great family event.” The children learn teamwork, engineering, scientific method and enjoy the beautiful shaded redwoods of Dracena Park.
