Trip Description
The Piedmont Council of the Boy Scouts of America is pleased to announce its 2022 summer high adventure trip to Northern Tier in Ely, Minnesota where scouts will explore the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
The Northern Tier – Charles L Sommers Base is located near Ely, MN at the edge of the one million acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Scouts will travel together from the Bay Area to the Northern Tier Base then separate into “crews” of nine. Crews will spend 6 days and 5 nights paddling, portaging, and camping throughout the BWCAW. Each crew chooses its own route and navigates using maps and compass. A professional guide joins each crew for the trip but, in true scout tradition, each crew will be scout led. Minimum Requirements for Youth
Scouts must be at least 14 years of age (by trip date) or have completed 8th grade; be strong swimmers meeting BSA Swimmer level certification; and weigh at least 100lbs. It is also strongly recommended that scouts have prior backpacking experience and can carry a 100lb pack for ¼ mile.
Trip Dates and Travel Summary – Depart Tuesday 6/21/2022, Return Wednesday 6/29/2022
Piedmont Council has reserved space for two crews totaling 12 scouts and 4 adults. Adult leaders will be: Crew A – Troy Alering and Jason Stein; Crew B – Jason Lambert and an adult TBD. Depending on interest and availability, a third crew may be added.
Fly to Minneapolis/St Paul 6/21/2022, stay locally 1st night
Drive to Ely Base 6/22/2022, arrive afternoon, about 6 hr bus ride with stops
First and last nights stay at Ely Base; on water from 6/23-6/28, 6 days/5 nights
Depart Ely Base 6/29/2022 in AM, drive to airport directly, fly home same day
The estimated trip cost is $1,800 including airfare. Personal gear is not included in this budget and is extra. Allow an additional $200 for miscellaneous travel costs and personal gear. Camperships available.
