2022 Rebuilding Together Oakland
Piedmont Community Service Crew, a youth-led (ages 14-20) core program of Piedmont Council, Boy Scouts of America, is well underway on their annual Rebuilding Together Oakland (RTO) project! For 16 years, PCSC has collaborated with RTO to work on roughly 20 major projects to renovate a low income elderly person’s home. This has always been the highlight of the crew’s year, often the reason a teen joins PCSC. Since 2009, PCSC has proudly been an annual sponsor of RTO. They are an exceptional volunteer organization because PCSC does it all; for each project, they fund, plan and do all the volunteer work. This year, they are renovating Elizabeth’s home.
Elizabeth previously worked as a social worker for children and domestic violence cases. She has always been a parrot enthusiast, and has two of her own right now! She spends her days hanging out with them, and in her garden, which often attracts monarch butterflies. Although plagued with multiple health issues, she volunteers to care for an elderly neighbor every Saturday and Sunday, when she’s not scheduled for hospital treatments for her own ailments.
Unfortunately, she has recently been the victim of multiple break-ins because of the disintegrating fencing that surrounds her backyard, and this has become a large source of anxiety for her. In addition, she tends a large garden as a source of food, but it has been raided multiple times. Together, PCSC is going to fund, plan, and build a new fence, along with fixing her gates, painting, and making house adjustment to increase her safety. The crew is planning work weekends throughout the month of April. Learn more about RTO Oakland HERE
