Organized in 1974 as an Explorer Post of the Piedmont Council, the Oakland Strokes has gone on to offer an excellent training program. Hundreds of area youth compete each year in the Strokes program, from Lake Merritt all the way to the Henley Regatta in the UK. Along the way, the club has garnered a remarkable track record, matching that of any other rowing club in the country.
Open to full-time high school students who are interested in learning to row and compete in the sport, the program is made up of Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s crews (Men’s Varsity, Women’s Varsity, Novice Men’s and Novice Women’s crews). In addition to rowing technique, the coaches emphasize our values of teamwork, leadership, initiative, dedication and fellowship.
